2024 KF Fellowship - Loo Si Jing (University of Malaya)
My journey to Sookmyung Women’s University (SMU) began when I enrolled in the International Trade of South Korea course at my home university in Malaysia. This course, part of the Korea Foundation e-global school program launched by SMU, ignited my interest in Korea’s culture, economy, and global presence. When I learned about the Sookmyung International Summer School (SISS), I knew it was the perfect opportunity to deepen my understanding of Korea and experience the country firsthand.
SMU's Programs
During the SISS, I took the "Understanding of Korea through Keywords" course with Professor Chun Sehjae. This class was an enlightening experience, as Professor Chun introduced us to Korea through various topics, offering us a deep dive into its culture, trends, and current issues. His detailed explanations, paired with well-prepared slides, made the learning process both engaging and informative. What stood out to me was how he actively involved the students by encouraging us to compare aspects of our home countries with Korea. This approach not only made the class more lively and interactive but also helped us appreciate the unique
characteristics of Korea from a global perspective.
Another highlight of my time at SMU was the Taekwondo and Korean Sports Culture class, taught by Master Lee Chun Hyung. This was undoubtedly my favorite class, as I have always wanted to learn Taekwondo. Master Lee's teaching style was both patient and encouraging, ensuring that we learned the basic Taekwondo skills correctly. He was meticulous in correcting our mistakes, which helped us improve rapidly. Beyond the classroom, Master Lee took us on a hike to Gwanaksan and even invited us to visit his gym. His kindness extended beyond teaching, as he often treated us to food and ice cream, making us feel truly welcomed. Most importantly, his concern for our safety made me feel warm every time.
SMU also organized numerous cultural activities that enriched our experience, such as a DMZ trip, making Korean desserts, visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, learning Korean calligraphy, K-pop dance sessions, and watching the Nanta Show. Of all these activities, watching the Nanta Show was my favorite. The show was an incredible blend of comedy, music, and acrobatics, showcasing the vibrant energy of Korean performance art.
What I Learned About Korea
Through the SISS, I gained a deeper understanding of Korea’s rich culture, historical complexities, and contemporary issues. The Fellowship Program, in particular, offered me a unique perspective on Korea’s global influence, especially in the realms of technology, entertainment, and education. I was fascinated by how Korea has managed to maintain its traditional values while embracing rapid modernization. This delicate balance is evident in everything from the preservation of historical sites like Gyeongbokgung Palace to the global success of K-pop.
The most interesting aspect of Korea, however, was the warmth and hospitality of the people. Whether it was Professor Chun’s engaging lectures, Master Lee’s caring guidance, or the friendly locals we met during our excursions, I was constantly struck by the kindness and generosity of the Korean people. This, along with the accompaniment of Korean buddies (URINK) and support by SMU OIA and KF Global e-School Program OIA, made my time at SMU truly unforgettable.
In conclusion, my one-month exchange at Sookmyung Women’s University was an enriching experience that broadened my horizons, both academically and personally. I returned home with a deeper appreciation for Korea and a desire to continue exploring its culture in the future.
